Having adequate EV charging stations in the US is crucial to enabling longer driving ranges and reducing waiting times at chargers as the market for electric vehicles grows. EV sales in the US increased during the past ten years, but more EV charging stations across the US are required to keep up with the demand. By 2030, 50% of all vehicles sold in the US are expected to be net-zero emitters of greenhouse emissions, according to an executive order signed by President Joe Biden in August 2021.

There are currently over 56,000 total EV charging stations in the US, with about 148,000 charging ports. While this is sufficient to support the current number of EVs that are registered, in order to support the expected number of EVs on the road by 2030, the US would need to triple its installation rates over the next eight years roughly.

A wide variety of businesses provide public EV charging stations in the US. However, the proportion of those having a sizable network is substantially lower. Additionally, few provide DC Fast Charging stations, the only ones that are useful for long drives with electric cars. Though there are exceptions, EV owners should ideally be able to charge their vehicles most of the time at home and save rapid charging for long drives. Level 2 EV charging stations are almost everywhere in the country, which is fine if you have some spare time. A Level 2 charging station won't help you refuel quickly enough to get back on the road, though. The majority of EV owners utilize Level 2 to charge their vehicles when they are parked at work, at home, or in a hotel.

Which States Have the Most EV Charging Stations in the US?

When we look at the map of EV charging stations in the US, the majority of electric car charging stations in the US are found on the west and east coasts of the country, whereas the Midwest region is almost devoid of them, save for Colorado.

At 15,182, or 29% of all EV charging stations in America, California has the most EV charging stations overall. In fact, California has nearly twice as many chargers as the combined populations of New York (3,085), Florida (2,858), and Texas (2,419). The most significant concentration of EV charging stations in the US can be found in the four states with the highest GDPs, and California's sizable lead is not surprising, given its goal of totally ending the sale of new gas vehicles by 2035.

Although California had the most ports overall, there were more ports available to registered electric vehicles in numerous midwestern states. This is mainly because certain states only have a small number of registered EVs. The number of charging stations per 100 registered EVs is highest in North Dakota at 45, followed by Wyoming at 41 and West Virginia at 37. The entire country has ten charging stations for every 100 electric vehicles.

Free Electric Car Charging Stations in the US

While knowing how many EV charging stations in the US is easy, locating the free ones is harder. Charging stations with a generous attitude will either provide limitless free charging or a time limit between 30 and 4 hours before payment is necessary. While some EV charging stations in parking garages just charge for parking, others may charge a flat amount per session, by the number of kWh used, or on an hourly basis. In this sense, California has the freest EV charging stations in the US overall, with 11% of them free for 30 minutes or longer.
